Children Horizon Uganda (CHU) was basically founded by three members namely Eric Turyasiima, Alice Namudde and Lilian Kyasiimire. Eric is an Accountant and Business IT trained, Alice an Enrolled nurse and a Counsellor while Lilian, is a trained Journalist. They are all born and live in Uganda in different regions of the country. These founders are surrounded by a team of facility Directors and well trained and experienced management team.
Eric, Alice and Lilian (the founders) started this intervention following the life they lived in their childhood; Eric having lost his mother at an age of three (03) months and then being brought up by his other siblings and his father! then Alice also having lived a life without both parents although at a rather bit grown-up stage and Lilian having lost some relatives to HIV related infections and left with orphans and dependents. All these experiences, and what the life Ugandan children do live in today, compelled the trio to start this NGO.
Eric, Alice and Lilian, before coming up with this idea of starting up an organization had been looking after twenty (20) children who include orphans (single orphaned and total orphaned), the HIV/AIDS infected and affected and the most vulnerable and unprivileged from different parts of the country. These are provided with basic necessities of life like education, health facilities, clothing, food and shelter. The three therefore look forward to giving fully-fledged basic necessities of the children’s lives with A FACILITY OF AN ORPHANAGE HOME especially as many people in form of sponsors, volunteers and donors across the globe jump on board to give a supporting hand to this noble cause.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
According to universal declaration of human rights (UDHR) of 1948 to which Uganda is a signatory, every child has a right to have a name, nationality, affection, love, material security, adequate nutrition, shelter, education and medical care. However, in Uganda, these rights are violated y lacking in most of its regions and it is so intense on the vulnerable children.
It is from this background, that after CHU surveyed several regions in the country, it was discovered that the children were the mostly vulnerable and therefore there was a cause to intervene in seeing this poor trend of life change for better.
This will however, not limit CHU to concentrate on children as there is cause to also empower, sensitize the community parents, which action will directly help the children. These community interventions include counseling on feeding and nutrition, inception of self-generating activities and/or projects like women's art and craft, music dance and drama, gardening to mention but a few. Community intervention also include facilitation of water by construction of water tanks and water springs, sophisticated charcoal stoves; as, water and firewood were found out to have been the most burden to the country's communities and in the end encroaching on children's rights and rendering them abused.
All in all, these interventions will however, depend on the sponsorship, donations and/or participation from well wishers, other NGOs, interested agencies and not forgetting government's intervention!
TARGET POPULATION
After having looked at all the above, the following factors have been put into consideration in children selection: -
(a) AGE
The initial stage stipulates that children will be helped from their community homes and therefore, this will involve children ranging from one (01) day old up to twelve (12) years.
In a later stage i.e. when the organization is set and ready to own a home where it will recruit its children, the target age will be from two (02) years up to twelve (12) years. Nevertheless, this may not be limited to only two (02) years of age as they may be possibilities that children younger than this age may still need our help and these may include either children who are total orphans (all their parents are dead) and there are no guardians to take up these children or children have been abandoned y parents. In this case when such a child is recruited into the organization’s home, management has to see to it that there is or are enough baby seaters, since matrons alone cannot properly handle such children.
It is further planned that CHU will relinquish all children under its scheme upon reaching an age of sixteen (16). It is assumed and agreed by both the board and management that at that age children through both formal and informal education they will have gotten from the organization, will be able to fend for themselves.
(b) RACE/TRIBE and RELIGION
There will be no racial, tribal and religious affiliation discrimination as long as children are residents of Uganda.
(c) NUMBER OF CHILDREN
As the organization currently sponsors twenty (20) children, for the first and second years, the organization intends to diligently recruit more thirty (30) to make the total number to fifty (50). BUT as the years go by, and in case of viable and great donations and sponsorship realized, the organization would wish to recruit as many numbers as possible.
(d) SIZE OF COVERAGE
Children Horizon Uganda is targeting to begin recruiting within sub-counties. This will increase as many sponsors and/or donors join the board.
(e) SELECTION CRITERIA
CHU will use the local administrative leaders to identify the most affected families in terms of children vulnerability. CHU will therefore assess and evaluate from which families to get the children to be helped, and this will be done without any favor and discrimination but purely on who is worst vulnerable in terms to its set mission and mostly objectives. This exercise of evaluation will be done by well trained social workers, counselors and administrators of the organization as per the work-plan.
STRATEGY AND IMPLEMENTATION:
CHU will entirely be working on the use of work-plans (these will include annual and monthly work-plans) and in line with its mission and objectives. The work-plans clearly stipulates activities involved, time frame, responsible personnel involved in or supervising activities and evaluation of whether these activities are executed.
CHU has proposed to work within children own communities for the first and second years of existence and later acquire a home/orphanage where these children can be fully and well catered for.
The program starts early January next year (2011). SOURCE OF FUNDING / WAY FORWARD
(a) Initial Capital
This was injected in by the founders (Eric, Alice and Lilian ) for the twenty (20) children they have been supporting.
(b) Involvement in Income Generating Activities/businesses
Eric, Alice and Lilian have been involved in businesses that generate incomes which include a Drug shop and a Computer Secretarial Bureau. Money realized from these ventures coupled with their salary incomes have managed to support the twenty (20) children for the last two years.
(c) DONOR SUPPORT/PARTNERSHIP.
CHU hereby invites Donors, partners, volunteers and well wishers to join into this intervention to bring brighter and lasting lives of children of the world.
